Newly Expanded Port Credit Location!

As of June 28th, we are very proud and excited to call 119 Lakeshore Rd. East our new home! We quickly outgrew our first Port Credit location, and have since moved into a much larger space that is about 3 times the size of the first space, making room for a massively expanded selection. In the new shop you will find a wonderful variety of glass brands and a fantastic selection of original pieces by North American glass artists!

Snic Barnes & The Art of Electroforming

We have recently placed some unique pieces from glass artist Snic, an Electroforming pioneer in the lampworking community, on our shelves.  “Snic Barnes is a glass artist and mixed media pipe maker. His body of work is influenced by technology, the Industrial Revolution, and urban decay.”

Snic is most commonly noted for his use of the electroforming technique in conjunction with his functional glass pieces,  but it should be noted that Barnes is also a well respected maker of non-functional sculptural glass pieces in the American art scene.  With a great deal of training and experience under his belt, it isn’t surprising that Snic is gaining recognition on a worldwide level.  Check out his website for a comprehensive look at his many creations: http://www.snicbarnes.com/about/

New Glass Culture Media Available!

We have recently begin carrying two exciting new media-based items at the shop…

The first is Glass Culture Magazine, brought to us by Canadian creators of the Treating Yourself enterprise.  The magazine is geared toward high end glass enthusiasts, and consists of bi-monthly issues from the ever-developing world of glass: “Brought to you by a team that includes Marco Renda and Chris Carlson, one of the top glass artists in the world, Glass Culture Magazine is the only periodical focusing exclusively on the culture of glass art collecting and the emerging functional glass art form.  Glass Culture Magazine is going to be available 6 times per year, appearing on a bi-monthly schedule.  The magazine will be launching with a preview issue, in the September 2012 Treating Yourself, Issue #36, giving readers a taste of things to come.”  http://glassculturemagazine.com/

The second piece of new media on the Culture Rising shelves is Degenerate Art, a fresh off the press document of the art and culture of glass pipe-making:  “It is the first film to ever bring to light this invisible sub-culture in a comprehensive and well informed format. The film itself tells the story of the movement through the voices of the pipemakers themselves and the industry that surrounds them.  “Degenerate Art” tells the story of glass pipe-making from Bob Snodgrass and the origins of the “color-changing” pipe, to the radical emerging art movement it has become today. Despite federal laws and events like Operation Pipedreams, pipemakers are pioneering not only new techniques in working glass, but have also created a whole new genre of American folk art. Between raw materials and glass-working tools, and consumer demand for glass pipes, a huge multi-million dollar industry has formed around this taboo culture. The pieces not only reflect the artists making them, they are a reaction to the status quo. The work itself challenges our right to free speech and expression, as well as reflecting the nature of the people who make and collect the pieces. One of the last true underground scenes, glass pipe art remains invisible to mainstream culture. “Degenerate Art” will be the first of its kind, a historical instant cult classic documenting the golden era of the movement.  http://www.degenerateartfilm.com/

New Pieces from Canadian and American Glass Artists

We recently brought in a sweet selection of new pieces by well-known Canadian and American glass artists.  One of our favorite pieces is the Big Z Slyme Rig.  The quality, colour, and detail on this  rig are so mind blowing that we almost decided to take it home rather than put it on our shelves.

You’ve gotta see these Big Z’s in person – photos do not do them justice!  Drop into either location for an ‘in-the-flesh’ peek at a Big Z.
